MISSOULA – The Penetralia Chapter of Mortar Board National Honor Society at the University of Montana received a prestigious national award at the 2014 Mortar Board National Conference held Aug. 1-3 in Atlanta.
The UM chapter of Mortar Board received the Gold Torch Award, an honor awarded to only the most exceptional chapters of the organization. The Gold Torch Award was given to 24 chapters who demonstrated significant accomplishments in chapter management and contributed meaningful service to their institutions. The conference awarded 67 other chapters with the Silver Torch Award, given to chapters that meet all standards and deadlines of the organization.
Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement, scholarship, leadership and service. The UM Penetralia Chapter was charted in 1927, and is one of 229 chapters across the nation. It is most known for its national project, “Reading is Leading,” and its sponsorship of the President’s Outgoing Senior Recognition Award, which is presented to college seniors who have demonstrated exemplary work in their departments or student organizations at UM.
