MISSOULA – Former Wall Street Journal financial editor Steve Lipin will deliver the annual Jeff Cole Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, March 9, in University of Montana Law Building Room 201. The event is free and open to the public.
The talk, titled “The Competition for Eyeballs and Clicks in the Digital World,” is the seventh installment of the UM School of Journalism’s annual Jeff Cole Distinguished Lecture Series. The series honors Cole, a Butte native who graduated from the School of Journalism in 1980. He was the aeronautics editor at The Wall Street Journal when he was killed in a plane crash while on assignment in January 2001.
Lipin currently is senior partner at Brunswick Group LLC, a communications advisory firm based in New York. He counsels clients on mergers and acquisitions, investor relations and crisis situations.
Before working at Brunswick, Lipin spent 10 years at The Wall Street Journal where he was the finance editor, supervising the paper’s coverage of mergers, commercial banking, private equity and corporate finance. From 1995 to 2000, Lipin covered mergers and acquisitions for the Journal. He also reported on commercial banking and capital markets.
Lipin is proud to say he and Cole were longtime reporting partners and were nominated for a Pulitzer Prize by the Journal for their coverage of mergers in the aerospace sector. Lipin also was a member of a team that won an Overseas Press Club award.
Lipin has been a guest speaker at the Tulane Law School Corporate Law Institute, Columbia Journalism School, Penn Law School and the Yale School of Management. He serves as a board member of Student Sponsor Partners, a member of the board of advisers of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism at Columbia Journalism School, and a member of the board of overseers of the Columbia Journalism Review.
The lecture is supported by the Jeff Cole Legacy Fund, which also offers an annual scholarship and a spring dinner for students who work at the Montana Kaimin, UM’s independent student newspaper.
