UM College of Business Launches ‘A New Angle’ Podcast

So it’s only fitting that the University of Montana College of Business is launching “A New Angle,” a podcast that explores the work of inspiring people in the Montana business ecosystem.

“When someone clicks on an episode of ‘A New Angle,’ they’ll find an engaging conversation with a cool person doing something awesome,” said Associate Professor of Marketing Justin Angle, the podcast’s creator and host. “We’ll have deep conversations with people who think differently and break paradigms with the way they approach their work, no matter what industry they’re in.”

The 45- to 60-minute podcast releases new episodes biweekly, starting Tuesday, Jan. 30. A special first episode featuring Bryce Ward of UM’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research will be available for download on Jan. 26 on iTunes, Stitcher and SoundCloud. True to Angle’s word, creative thinking is a common characteristic across the 19 innovators already interviewed. Guests include Jeremy Sauter, marketer for Paramount Pictures; Karen Knudsen, executive director of the Clark Fork Coalition; Kyle Pucko, founder of GeoFli; Tyler Hamilton, former Tour de France cyclist; and Matt McQuilkin, co-owner of Black Coffee Roasting Company.

“This community is really special. There is great opportunity here, but to be successful you have to be creative and you have to hustle,” said Angle, who also is the Warren and Betsy Wilcox Faculty Fellow at the UM College of Business. “I want to talk to people about their creativity and hustle.” 

Angle lends his own expansive knowledge of business principles to each episode. His background makes for captivating content on a wide variety of topics. His work includes research on branding, identity and decision-making, which has garnered coverage in mainstream publications such as Sports Illustrated and The Washington Post.

A UM faculty member since 2012, Angle came up with the idea for the podcast in the classroom. Students in his Principles of Marketing class seemed more engaged when he assigned podcasts in place of readings, so he created a podcast for them. It covered key class concepts and interviewed fellow College of Business professors and professionals tied to the University or the Missoula community.

Angle soon realized the podcast could serve a broader audience. With so many of the community’s innovative thinkers tied to the College of Business, Angle wanted to connect with them and share their stories widely for the benefit of students and others in the community.

With support from the College of Business, Angle reached out to Stephen Borsum, a former UM student with a passion for digital media who now serves as the podcast’s producer. Musicians from the college contributed tracks for use on the show. Now, with a cache of recordings and a robust list of upcoming guests, Angle is excited about the potential of this new venture.

“Podcasts are invigorating because interesting ideas can play out in real time,” he said. “Academic research can be painfully slow, not to mention inaccessible, and business education needs stronger connections to practice. This podcast allows us to address both of these problems and have a ton of fun doing it.”
